Qatar vows to support electricity in 10 Syrian areas
The leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, held discussions regarding bilateral cooperation.
In a press conference held today in Damascus, on January 16, al-Sharaa stated that the two sides discussed various issues, including economic partnerships between Damascus and Doha.
He added that Qatar is one of the countries that has contributed to assisting the Syrian people and stands by them always, as he expressed.
For his part, bin Abdulrahman promised to continue his country’s technical support for the restoration of infrastructure and to enhance electricity in more than ten areas in Syria.
He also called for an urgent reconsideration of lifting sanctions on Syria, emphasizing Doha’s cooperation with Damascus in many files, including this one.
The Qatari Prime Minister welcomed the “positive” steps taken by the new Syrian administration, as he described it, and stated that Damascus and Doha are on the verge of a new phase in Syria’s history.
Bin Abdulrahman also announced an anticipated visit of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to Syria soon, without specifying the date.
This visit is the first for the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and the second of its kind after a delegation from Doha visited Damascus on December 23, 2024, following the fall of the regime.
Qatar has shown its support for the new Syrian administration on multiple occasions, providing assistance on various levels.
Israeli incursion
In response to Israel’s incursion into Syrian territory, al-Sharaa stated that Tel Aviv had been using the presence of Iran, the previous regime, and Hezbollah as a pretext to bomb Syria and advance into the buffer zone.
He expressed his readiness to welcome UN forces to the buffer zone to restore conditions to what they were before the Israeli advance.
He mentioned that he had informed international parties from the outset about Syria’s respect for the 1974 agreement and its readiness to receive UN forces and protect them, adding that all countries agree on the “mistake” of the Israeli advance and the necessity for it to withdraw to its previous position before its recent incursion.
For his part, bin Abdulrahman condemned the Israeli incursion, calling for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces and describing the incursion as “reckless behavior.”
Since the early hours following the fall of the Syrian regime on December 8, 2024, Israel has advanced into villages within the Quneitra and Daraa governorates in southern Syria, alongside the destruction of numerous military assets in various Syrian areas.
In its first targeting of the new Syrian administration’s forces, Israel attacked yesterday, using a drone, a convoy belonging to the Military Operations Administration in the village of Ghadir al-Bustan, located on the administrative border of the Quneitra and Daraa governorates in southern Syria.
The bombing resulted in the death of the village chief and injuries to others, according to a reporter from Enab Baladi.
Israel commented on the incident, stating that it monitored several vehicles loaded with weapons and ammunition moving near the buffer zone in southern Syria.
Israeli army spokesperson Avichai Adraee stated on “X” yesterday that the Israeli air force “opened fire near the vehicles to deter them, which moved away from the area,” as he expressed.
Adraee noted that the Israeli army is deployed in the region and will continue to work to “protect the State of Israel and its citizens.”
