The Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) operating in Idlib is undertaking service projects for the rehabilitation and pavement of the governorate’s main roads, in conjunction with its launch of engineering projects and workshops to beautify the city.  

The director-general of local councils in the SSG, Ahmed al-Yousef, met with the head of Idlib city council, Khair Eddin Issa, and Idlib’s municipal president Saleh al-Aswad, to oversee the regular activities of their engineering offices and workshops.  

During a meeting on 3 December, whose details were published by the SSG’s official website, the head of Idlib city council announced a group of service projects to beautify the city, maintain it, and pave its main streets.  

For his part, al-Yousef asked the city council of Idlib to choose and prepare places to set up popular markets so that owners of unlicensed stalls could move their activity to properly designated places, particularly those officially warned to remove their stalls.  

“The area’s local councils are focusing on the city of Idlib as it is the largest city in the liberated areas of northern Syria,” al-Yousef said.  

The local councils want to remove the violating and illegal property occupations that hinder the movement of people. They also seek to enhance the city’s entrances and maintain the main road pavements and roundabouts.  

Idlib city council has developed service and beautification projects for the city, supervised by engineering workshops, according to the head of the council. Such projects include the maintenance projects of al-Sabe’ Bahrat Roundabout, the Prison Roundabout, and the maintenance of gardens and pruning of their trees under the supervision of the general directorate of local councils.  

In 2005, the Syrian regime’s forces lost control of Idlib, and the Syrian Interim Government (SIG) took over the city before the formation of the SSG in late 2017. The SSG gradually controlled the city’s vital spots until it gained administrative authority over the entire city of Idlib and part of the western Aleppo countryside, a year and a half after its establishment. The SSG was formed following an agreement between the Hay’ at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the National Front for Liberation (NFL), which placed the entire region under the SSG’s influence.
