Four road security personnel were killed and six others injured in an attack by unidentified gunmen riding four motorcycles on Internal Security Forces and Road Security checkpoints and patrols in the Athriya and al-Hamra areas of eastern Hama countryside (central Syria), according to reports on Wednesday, October 14.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Hama reported that the coordinated attack targeted three patrols in the area. Three personnel were killed when a Road Security patrol was attacked on the Salamiyah-Athriya road, while the fourth was killed at the al-Hamra checkpoint in Hama countryside.
The correspondent explained that the attack also left six personnel injured, prompting a large-scale security mobilization by Internal Security Forces in the area.
According to the correspondent, those killed were Youssef al-Shaar from the village of Jadoua, Jayez Salloum from the village of Tal Adi, and Hamza Duraid Barazi, also from Tal Adi, in addition to Khaled al-Fahd, who was killed when a Road Security patrol was targeted at the al-Hamra checkpoint in eastern Hama countryside.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks on Road Security patrols so far.
Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba mourned the four personnel killed in attacks on two patrols in Hama countryside. In a post on his Facebook page, he stressed that the crime would not deter security agencies from continuing to pursue criminals and bring them to justice. Instead, he said, it would strengthen their determination to fulfill their duty to maintain citizens’ security and protect lives.
In an official clarification, Rajab Naqouh, head of the Road Security Branch, confirmed that the incident in the Salamiyah countryside involved attacks on two Road Security Branch patrols. He denied circulating reports of additional attacks or clashes in the area.
Naqouh urged the public to verify information, rely on official sources, and refrain from sharing unverified reports.
The latest attack comes months after a similar ambush targeted a Road Security Department patrol in Idlib governorate (northwestern Syria). At the time, the Interior Ministry announced that four of its personnel had been killed and another injured when a patrol was attacked on the road to Maarat al-Numan, in southern Idlib, on December 14, 2025.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Idlib reported at the time that unidentified gunmen attacked a security patrol near the city’s southern bridge, causing casualties. Specialized security units conducted extensive search operations in the area to pursue those responsible. Enab Baladi had not claimed responsibility for the attack by the time the report was published.
Earlier, on December 9, 2025, the Islamic State group (ISIS) claimed responsibility for killing a judicial official by detonating an explosive device attached to his vehicle in the town of Deir Hassan, in Idlib countryside.
Two customs enforcement personnel were also killed when their patrol was ambushed by the group while escorting a transit truck in the al-Zarbah area of southern Aleppo countryside (northern Syria), according to the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs.
In early December 2025, the Interior Ministry announced that it had carried out two security operations in Idlib governorate targeting ISIS cells. The operations resulted in the seizure of small arms, ammunition, explosive belts, and ready-to-use explosive devices, as well as the killing of two militants who refused to surrender.
The details were announced by Brigadier General Ghassan Bakir, head of Internal Security in Idlib, who also revealed that some of those detained were implicated in the killing of a civilian and the burial of his body near the city of Maarat Misrin.
