The Israeli army released a Syrian detainee from Quneitra governorate (southwestern Syria) on Tuesday, Sept. 15, after he had spent more than a year in Israeli prisons.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent reported that Israeli forces released Bashar Khaled al-Jassem, a young man from the village of Ruwayhina in the central Quneitra countryside.

The correspondent added that al-Jassem had spent more than a year in Israeli detention, noting that he was arrested on Aug. 21, 2025.

The number of Syrian detainees in Israeli prisons has now fallen to 39, from 40 before the latest release.

Israel continues to carry out arrests of young men in southern Syria. Some detentions last only hours, while in other cases detainees remain in custody for longer periods, with no information available about the details or conditions of their detention.

The Israeli army also released a young man from the village of al-Asha in the southern Quneitra countryside on Sept. 13.

He was released several hours after being detained while grazing sheep near a position belonging to United Nations forces.

Recent Releases

Recent months have seen a series of releases of Syrian detainees from Israeli prisons.

On Sept. 9, the Israeli army released three Syrian detainees from Daraa and Quneitra governorates in southern Syria.

Four detainees were also released on Aug. 26, following another release on Aug. 19 involving three detainees, as well as the release of two detainees on Aug. 5.

Four people from Quneitra and Daraa governorates were released in July.

The releases have taken place amid periodic protests by residents demanding the release of their detained relatives.

267 Violations in August

The Sijil Center documented 267 violations that it said were committed by Israeli occupation forces inside Syrian territory during August.

According to the center’s statistics, the number of Israeli violations in August rose by 43% compared with July, when 187 violations were recorded. The August figure was also about 12% higher than in June, which saw 239 violations.

According to the Sijil Center, August recorded the second-highest monthly total of Israeli violations since the beginning of 2026, after March, when 321 violations were documented. The August total also exceeded April’s 254 recorded violations.

The center’s data showed that Israeli forces committed 1,752 violations inside Syria from the beginning of 2026 through the end of August.
