Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty condemned the “flagrant Israeli violations of Syria’s sovereignty,” stressing his country’s rejection of any external interference in Syrian affairs.

His remarks came during a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister and Expatriates Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on the sidelines of the Arab consultative meeting and the resumed 165th ministerial session of the Council of the League of Arab States.

According to a statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty stressed the need for Israel to withdraw from Syrian territory and abide by the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. He also emphasized the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, empowering Syrian national state institutions, and supporting regional and international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism in all forms.

In the same context, the Egyptian minister stressed the importance of strengthening Arab coordination amid the political and security challenges facing the region, and rejected any external interference in Syria’s internal affairs, according to the statement.

Syrian-Egyptian Relations and Expected Economic Cooperation

On the bilateral track, al-Shaibani and Abdelatty discussed the depth of historic relations between the two countries. Both sides stressed the importance of building on the Syrian minister’s visit to Cairo in early May, in a way that strengthens political and economic communication channels between Damascus and Cairo.

The two sides also welcomed holding the second Egyptian-Syrian government meeting at the senior officials’ level, with the participation of ministries and bodies concerned with trade and investment, to discuss practical steps to strengthen joint economic cooperation, according to the Egyptian statement, which noted that no date has yet been set for the meeting.

Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines

On the sidelines of the Arab ministerial meetings in Amman, the Syrian foreign minister held a series of bilateral meetings with several foreign ministers and participating officials. They included Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, SANA, the meetings addressed files related to bilateral relations between Syria and the participating countries, in addition to discussing current regional developments and ways to strengthen joint Arab coordination in facing political and security challenges.

Amman Meetings Begin

The Arab foreign ministers’ consultative meeting began in the Jordanian capital, Amman, at the invitation of Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, as part of efforts to coordinate Arab positions and exchange views on regional issues.

According to Jordanian media, the meeting aims to strengthen joint Arab action and confront current regional challenges by forming unified positions toward files on the Arab agenda.

After the consultative meeting, Amman is also hosting the resumed 165th regular ministerial session of the Council of the League of Arab States, which is discussing several political and security issues of common concern, along with topics listed on the council’s agenda.

This session continues the work of the council’s previous regular session, amid ongoing Arab diplomatic activity aimed at coordinating positions and strengthening cooperation among member states of the League of Arab States.
