The General Security Directorate launched a security campaign in the neighborhoods of old Damascus to enhance security and stability, stating that it managed to arrest several elements affiliated with the remnants of the Assad regime.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday, March 26, that General Security forces found explosive devices, weapons, and ammunition prepared for detonation in vital areas in the possession of the Assad remnants who were arrested in the old Damascus neighborhoods.
In the context of the security campaign in Damascus, the Syrian Ministry of Interior arrested Maher Ziad Hadid, a military leader and the military security arm in the Tadamon area of the former regime.
The Syrian Interior Ministry added that Hadid is involved in crimes of murder, detention, and disappearance against civilians in the neighborhood and will be referred to the competent judiciary to complete the necessary legal proceedings.
The Directorate of Security in rural Damascus also apprehended Shadi Adel Mahfouz, who worked for the Military Intelligence in Branch 277.
The rural Damascus Security Directorate stated that Mahfouz was responsible for recruiting for the Military Security Directorate during the Assad regime’s tenure and is involved in war crimes, having recently participated with the Assad remnants in targeting security and military forces along the coast. He will be presented to the competent judiciary for necessary legal action.
As part of its plan to enhance security and stability, the General Security Directorate has deployed a wide presence of security forces in the neighborhoods and markets of old Damascus with the approach of Eid al-Fitr, amidst increasing crowds in the markets to ensure the safety of citizens and protect property.
The Damascus Traffic Police have also intensified their presence at road intersections and market entrances in the capital to ensure traffic organization and facilitate movement, amid increasing congestion with the approaching holiday.
Previously, the Ministry of Interior of the Damascus interim government had launched several simultaneous security campaigns to arrest remnants of the former regime in multiple provinces, including Damascus and its countryside.
The Syrian transitional president Ahmed al-Sharaa stated in a previous remark that the Syrian Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense would not hesitate to hold accountable criminals, murderers, and security and military officers of the Assad regime involved in torturing the Syrian people.
The Military Operations Administration had previously announced that it would provide rewards for information about senior army and security officers involved in war crimes, reaffirming its commitment to forgiveness for those whose hands are not stained with the blood of the Syrian people and granting amnesty to those who were under compulsory service.
