King Abdullah II of Jordan affirmed his country’s support for Syria in the rebuilding process, through a process that involves the Syrian people in all its components, ensuring Syria’s unity, security, and stability.

During the meeting with Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who made a brief visit to Amman on Wednesday, February 26, both sides discussed opportunities to develop cooperation and reach common formulas to enhance and sustain coordination at various levels, achieving common interests and strengthening Arab unity.

The Jordanian king condemned the Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, emphasizing his country’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

He also highlighted the need to create suitable conditions for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their country, in addition to a commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, energy, and water sectors.

The discussions also addressed the necessity of close coordination between the two countries in facing various challenges related to border security and limiting weapons and drug smuggling, stressing the importance of Syria returning to its active role in its Arab surroundings, as reported by the Jordanian News Agency (Petra).

The meeting was attended by the Jordanian Prime Minister, the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Syrian Foreign Minister, and officials from both sides.

On Wednesday, the Syrian president made a visit to Jordan, where he was received by the Jordanian king.

Al-Shara was accompanied on his first visit to Jordan since taking office, and his third outer visit following Saudi Arabia and Turkey, by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and other officials.

The official Syrian news agency (SANA) reported that al-Sharaa arrived at the Basman Royal Palace in Amman to hold talks with the Jordanian king and his crown prince.

This visit is part of an unprecedented Arab foreign tour, which is scheduled to include Qatar and the UAE after Jordan.

The visit comes at a time when Amman seeks to establish a unified Arab stance against proposals to displace Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank, just ahead of the emergency Arab summit in Cairo on March 4, to which the Syrian president has received an official invitation to participate.

Previously, on December 23, 2024, the Jordanian Foreign Minister visited Damascus and met with his Syrian counterpart and President Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking Jordan’s first official move towards Syria following the fall of the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime on the 8th of the same month.
