Around 1,700 Syrians return daily from Turkey
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that 1,672 people have been returning to Syria daily since the fall of Bashar al-Assad on December 8.
The number of Syrians who returned to Syria over a 21-day period (from December 9 to December 28) reached 35,114, most of them to Aleppo, according to CNN Türk reported by Yerlikaya.
Yerlikaya explained that 30% of the Syrians residing in Turkey, totaling 2,805,000, are children born in Turkey and have not been granted citizenship (children born in Turkey do not carry Turkish citizenship and reside under temporary protection, and once they leave for Syria, their temporary protection ends).
A migration office is set to open in Damascus to provide educational assistance to institutions in Damascus, and “return operations will increase as summer approaches, when schools are on holiday,” according to Yerlikaya.
After the fall of Assad’s regime on December 8, the Turkish border crossings with Syria witnessed noticeable density and congestion from returning Syrians after years of asylum in Turkey.
On December 10, the border crossings between Syria and Turkey announced new decisions to facilitate the return of Syrians to their country.
Most crossings are currently operating around the clock to facilitate the entry of returnees into Syria, and returnees can bring their household furniture and transport it by car to the Syrian crossing.
The Turkish Interior Minister announced an increase in the capacity for entry through border crossings from three thousand to between 15,000 and 20,000 daily.
On December 25, the Turkish Interior issued a decision allowing a family member to visit Syria during the first six months of 2025.
Syrian human rights activist Taha Ghazi explained to Enab Baladi that the visit does not mean voluntary return, and the visitor can remain in Turkey without losing their temporary protection status.
Syrian individuals who are not connected to families in Turkey have the right to apply for a visit, according to what the refugee rights activist confirmed.
Regarding the application process, Ghazi stated that the Migration Administration will prepare a special system on its website for scheduling appointments for holidays, similar to the holiday leave system previously launched by it.
Ghazi reported that Syrians with dual nationality have the right to visit their home country through a third country, such as Jordan or Lebanon, noting that there has been a proposal to allow them entry to Syria through joint border crossings.
