Two people were killed in separate security incidents in Daraa governorate (southern Syria) on Sunday morning, October 25, including a member of the Highway Security Forces. Another security officer was injured.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the Syrian Interior Ministry’s Internal Security Forces said gunmen attacked a highway security checkpoint in the Bosra al-Sham area of eastern Daraa countryside, killing one officer and injuring another.

Specialized security units immediately launched operations and arrested the perpetrators following an exchange of fire. Investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances and motives behind the attack.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that Mohammed Ahmad al-Miqdad, a member of the Internal Security Forces’ highway security division who was killed in the armed attack on a checkpoint at the Kharba village junction, was taken in a funeral procession from Daraa National Hospital to his hometown of Bosra al-Sham.

Municipal Employee Assassinated in Zizoun

In a separate incident, the body of Yassin al-Hashish, a young municipal employee, was found on Sunday morning at the Zizoun al-Ajami junction in western Daraa countryside. He had been shot three times.

The correspondent also reported that three individuals attempted to burglarize a house in the town of Sahem El Golan(western Daraa countryside) early on Saturday, October 24.

The homeowner opened fire on the burglars, injuring one of them, while the other two fled, according to the correspondent.

Daraa governorate witnessed security tensions in September, including attacks targeting civilians and the killing and wounding of several security personnel during raids targeting wanted individuals.

At the time, these incidents occurred amid a heightened security alert that lasted several days in the city of al-Sanamayn (northern Daraa countryside). Three security personnel were killed and others injured during a raid on a house where members affiliated with armed commander Mohsen al-Haymed were barricaded. Al-Haymed is accused of previously having ties to the Islamic State group and was affiliated with the former regime’s Military Security apparatus.

On September 18, the governorate witnessed three consecutive security operations in a single day.

These incidents have brought Daraa back to conditions resembling those that prevailed before the fall of the former Syrian regime, when the area experienced persistent security chaos.
