Jordan announced it has equipped a new area with the technology needed to speed the entry of commercial trucks from Syria, noting the facility can accommodate about 200 trucks loaded with goods.
Acting Mafraq Governor Ahmad Al-Zuhair told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, in remarks published Tuesday, September 15, that the Jordanian government had also prepared a dedicated passport control building for bus passengers to facilitate their movement alongside the other procedures being implemented.
Al-Zuhair said work is also underway to establish an operations room connected to central departments and the agencies operating at the Jaber Border Center, to reduce and streamline routine procedures for travelers and trucks carrying goods.
The Jordanian official said these steps are part of a government plan to develop border crossings during 2027, 2028, and 2029. The plan includes expanding vehicle and bus lanes at the Jaber Border Center, opposite Syria’s Nassib crossing, to reduce congestion and facilitate movement across the border.
Al-Zuhair noted that the measures were implemented under a plan directed by Jordanian Interior Minister Mazin Al-Farrayeh, as part of the ministry’s vision to develop border centers and ease procedures for travelers and freight traffic.
The Jordanian measures come amid an agreement with the Syrian side to expand the Nassib and Jaber crossings on both the Syrian and Jordanian sides.
The agreement, signed on November 24, 2025, aims to accommodate the growing number of trucks and travelers, strengthen the border crossing’s operational capacity, and improve its logistical efficiency.
Strong Trade Activity
The General Authority for Ports and Customs said on June 2 that the Nassib border crossing was experiencing strong and continuous commercial activity around the clock, with trucks continuing to cross.
According to the authority, a total of 50,272 trucks crossed the border point from the beginning of 2026 through the end of May. Of these, 18,374 trucks entered Syria, while 31,898 departed the country.
The authority said the figures reflected the growing volume of commercial activity and the vital role the crossing plays in transportation and trade between Syria and Jordan.
For its part, Jordan’s Department of Statistics issued a report detailing trade between Syria and Jordan.
According to the data, Jordanian exports to Syria rose during the first four months of 2026 to about 101 million Jordanian dinars, approximately $142.4 million, compared with 73 million dinars, approximately $103 million, during the same period last year, an increase of 38.4%.
Meanwhile, Jordan’s imports from Syria fell to 12 million dinars, approximately $16.9 million, down 42.9% from 21 million dinars, approximately $29.6 million, during the same period in 2025.
