Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said relations between Cairo and Damascus are “normal” and progressing well, reaffirming Egypt’s support for Syria’s security, stability, and the unity of its institutions as Cairo continues to strengthen political and economic contacts with Damascus.

Speaking in a televised interview with Egypt’s al-Ghad channel, Abdelatty said Egypt views Syria’s security and stability as an Egyptian and Arab interest. He added that Cairo is prepared to offer advice to the Syrian side on issues it believes affect the stability of the country and the region.

The Egyptian minister said Cairo is keen for Syria’s political process to be inclusive and not exclude any party, while also addressing terrorism in a way that ensures Syrian territory does not become a source of threats to neighboring countries or the wider region.

Abdelatty’s remarks come amid continued Egyptian engagement on Syria. In recent months, Cairo has intensified contacts with Syrian officials and repeatedly affirmed its support for Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as for strengthening Syrian state institutions.

Expected Visit to Damascus

Abdelatty said he intends to visit the Syrian capital, Damascus, “in the future,” without specifying a date, indicating that political communication between the two countries will continue.

The Egyptian minister also referred to visits by Egyptian economic and trade delegations to Syria, saying relations between the two countries are not limited to politics but also include efforts to develop economic, trade, and investment cooperation.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani visited Cairo on May 3 and met Abdelatty for talks on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

According to Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty reaffirmed during the meeting Egypt’s support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejected foreign interference in its affairs, and stressed the need to strengthen Syrian state institutions.

On June 22, Abdelatty met al-Shaibani again on the sidelines of an Arab League Council meeting in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

In a statement following the meeting, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the two ministers discussed strengthening bilateral relations and welcomed plans to hold the second Egyptian-Syrian governmental meeting at the level of senior officials. The meeting would involve ministries and agencies concerned with trade and investment in both countries and examine practical steps to strengthen joint economic cooperation.

Abdelatty also reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of Israeli violations in Syria and called for respect for the country’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

“Advice to Our Brothers”

Discussing Cairo’s position on political and security developments in Syria, Abdelatty said that whenever Egypt has “any matters or advice,” it conveys them to its “brothers in Syria,” based on its view that Syria’s security and stability are “an Egyptian and Arab interest.”

Since the fall of the former regime in December 2024, Cairo has stressed the need to preserve Syria’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and state institutions, while advancing an inclusive political process.

In December 2025, Abdelatty said Egypt supports the Syrian state and respects its sovereignty, calling for coordinated regional and international efforts to restore stability in the country.

At the time, he also called for an inclusive political process involving the various segments and components of Syrian society, without foreign interference, to pave the way for restoring stability and ending Syrians’ suffering.

Cairo has reiterated this position in Abdelatty’s meetings with Syrian officials during 2026, affirming its support for strengthening Syria’s national state institutions and rejecting foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs.
