One person was killed and four others were injured when a landmine exploded in Duwayr al-Akrad, a village in the Hama countryside in central Syria, on Tuesday, July 28.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Hama reported that a civilian was killed and four others were injured when a landmine left behind by the former regime exploded in Duwayr al-Akrad.

The correspondent said a cluster munition remnant exploded near a family in the village. The injured received medical treatment, while the body was transferred to the National Hospital in Jisr al-Shughur, Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria.

The Syrian al-Ikhbariya channel also confirmed that one person was killed and others were injured when a mine left behind by the ousted regime exploded in Duwayr al-Akrad in the Hama countryside.

The incident was the second mine blast reported in Syria that day. A Syrian Ministry of Defense soldier was killed and another was injured when a mine exploded near al-Kabina village in the northern Latakia countryside, western Syria.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Latakia reported that a vehicle struck a landmine while engineering teams affiliated with the Ministry of Defense were working in the area, killing one ministry member and injuring another.

The correspondent said Syrian Civil Defense teams were working to extinguish the fire caused by the explosion. They also transported the body and took the injured person to the nearest medical facility.

The Ministry of Defense’s Media and Communications Department told the Syrian Arab News Agency, SANA, that a soldier was killed and another was injured while carrying out their duties when a mine, a remnant of war, exploded near al-Kabina village in the Latakia countryside.

Two people were also killed when a landmine exploded west of al-Sukhnah city in the eastern Homs countryside, in central Syria, on July 6.

SANA reported at the time that the two young men were killed while attempting to move and dispose of the mine in an area about 20 kilometers west of al-Sukhnah.

Local sources in the area told Enab Baladi that the mine exploded while the two men were handling it in the al-Sukhnah desert. One died at the scene, while the other died after being taken to the hospital.

Mine Victims

In a report, the Syrian Network for Human Rights documented deaths caused by landmines and cluster munition remnants in Syria since March 2011. The organization said at least 3,799 civilians had been killed, including 1,000 children and 377 women.

The report said the threat persisted after the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. It documented the deaths of 329 civilians, including 65 children, in the subsequent period, as displaced people returned in large numbers to homes and farmland contaminated with explosive remnants of war. Aleppo, Raqqa, Deir Ezzor, and Hama governorates topped the list of areas most affected by what the report described as a “hidden killer.”

More Than 29,000 Munitions Removed

Syrian Civil Defense teams specializing in the removal of unexploded ordnance, operating under the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, continue working to clear contaminated land across Syria.

In a statement, the Syrian Civil Defense said its teams had removed more than 29,000 items of unexploded ordnance since beginning their work in this field, including more than 24,000 cluster munition remnants.

The statement said every munition destroyed represented “a life saved.” It stressed that explosive remnants of war directly obstruct stability and education and warned of their profound physical and psychological effects on children, who face the greatest danger while playing or traveling.
