Syrian Minister of Energy, Mohammad al-Bashir, confirmed on Wednesday, July 2, that Syria and Jordan have agreed to increase the quantities of gas that will be sent through Jordan to Syria, coming from Qatar, according to Jordan’s Al-Mamlaka TV channel.

Al-Bashir made the statement during a joint press conference with Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh al-Kharabsheh, and Jordanian Minister of Water, Raed Abu Saud. He stated that the World Bank has provided a grant to rehabilitate the electricity interconnection line between Syria and Jordan.

He noted that technical committees have been formed between Jordan and Syria to follow up on the implementation of the electricity interconnection line, aiming to improve the electricity supply in Syria by 250–300 megawatts in the first phase. Additional technical committees have also been established to discuss water agreements between the two countries, specifically the Yarmouk Basin Agreement, which pertains to the water sector between Jordan and Syria.

Al-Bashir explained that the Syrian Ministry of Energy has signed an agreement to establish four solar power plants inside Syria. He added that there will also be opportunities for Jordanian companies working in the solar and clean energy sectors to operate in Syria.

For his part, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh al-Kharabsheh, confirmed that Jordan is holding talks with the Syrian side to supply Syria with electrical power.

Al-Kharabsheh, stated that a work plan has been prepared to explore areas of cooperation in the energy sector between Jordan and Syria, “at a time when Jordan is placing all of its capabilities at Syria’s disposal in this field.”

He also pointed out that Jordan’s expertise in the fields of renewable energy, electricity distribution, and petroleum product storage is available to the Syrians.

On June 25, Syrian Minister of Energy, Mohammad al-Bashir, announced that an agreement had been reached to accelerate the process of delivering Qatari gas to Syria, in order to improve electricity generation and the overall electricity situation in the country.

In a post on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter), al-Bashir stated that the Ministry of Energy had coordinated with both Qatar and Jordan, and that they had agreed on a set of steps that would speed up the process of supplying gas for electricity generation — thereby increasing the number of operating hours across all Syrian provinces.

Al-Bashir held a meeting on June 24 with Jordanian Minister of Energy, Saleh al-Kharabsheh, and the Director-General of the Qatar Fund for Development, Fahd bin Hamad al-Sulaiti, to discuss mechanisms for transporting Qatari gas to Syria via Jordan, the role of the Qatar Fund in supporting projects, and opportunities for investment and knowledge exchange.

On March 13, Qatar launched an initiative to supply Syria with natural gas through Jordan, aiming to contribute to the generation of electrical power.
