The Foreign Ministry of the interim government in Damascus condemned what it described as “Israeli aggression and dangerous escalation” witnessed in the village of Koya in southern Syria’s Daraa.

In a statement from the Syrian Foreign Ministry today, Tuesday, March 25, it noted that this escalation comes in the context of “a series of ongoing violations that began with the incursion of Israeli forces into the Quneitra and Daraa governorates as part of a continuous aggression against Syrian territory,” which it considered “a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and international laws.”

The ministry expressed its rejection of what it termed as “crimes,” urging for an international investigation into the “crimes committed against the innocents and Israeli violations.”

The Syrian Foreign Ministry also called on Syrians to hold on to their land and reject attempts at displacement or the imposition of a new reality by force.

Similarly, Daraa Governor Anwar al-Zoubi denounced what he described as “violations of Israeli occupation,” holding it responsible for the casualties.

In the same context, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry condemned Israeli actions in southern Syria, most notably the Israeli artillery shelling that resulted in the deaths of civilians in Daraa governorate.

Amman considered the Israeli attack to be “a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and unity of Syria, and a dangerous escalation that will only lead to conflict and tension in the region.”

The ministry’s statement, attributed to its spokesperson, Sufyan al-Qudah, expressed Jordan’s firm rejection of Israeli assaults on Syrian territory.

Al-Qudah also rejected what he termed a “clear violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria,” warning of the repercussions of escalating tensions in the region.

Today, six people were killed and several others injured from Israeli tank fire on the town of Koya in western Daraa, following resistance from local youth opposing the Israeli incursion.

A reporter from Enab Baladi reported that young men from Koya resisted an incursion by the Israeli army, which responded by shooting, killing two of them. Following this, the Israeli tanks shelled homes in the village with about ten shells, leading to casualties and injuries among civilians.

The village has witnessed a mass exodus, as shelling from tanks continues. In recent hours, three shells hit, amidst constant hovering of helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft, according to Enab Baladi’s reporter.

On his part, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee stated that Israeli forces identified several individuals labeled as “terrorists” who fired upon the army in southern Syria, and a drone targeted them, causing injuries among them.

Adraee did not mention the tank shells that targeted civilian homes in the village.

This escalation by Israel is the first of its kind in the city during March, as Israel previously shelled Daraa on March 17, causing fatalities and injuries.

Residents in the border villages with the occupied Golan Heights are concerned about the advance of Israeli forces and the occupation of some villages, especially after the absence of any deterrent forces to prevent their advance.

The Israeli incursion began in the early hours after the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, with Israel targeting numerous military and civilian sites inside Syria.

Israel justifies its incursions as necessary for the protection of its security and citizens, and it rejects any military presence of the authorities in Damascus in southern Syria.
