The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced the dismantling of a cell linked to the ousted regime’s forces in Deir Ezzor governorate that was working to “create chaos” and attack its forces in the area.

The SDF stated today, Friday, January 31, that its “military operation teams” carried out a security operation in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor a week ago, targeting a cell affiliated with the “remnants of the Baath regime” and elements from the “National Defense.”

They added that the remnants of the ousted regime were working to “incite sedition and spread chaos,” along with executing attacks against their forces in the region.

The operation came after gathering information about the activities and movements of the cell, enabling them to identify their hiding places.

According to the SDF, the operation resulted in the arrest of four individuals from the group, as stated in an official statement.

Previously, the SDF launched similar security campaigns in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor at the beginning of January 2025, with the participation of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish).

A reporter from Enab Baladi in Deir Ezzor noted that the SDF initiated a security campaign in the towns and villages of the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor to pursue those they refer to as “remnants of the former regime” and armed groups linked to Ibrahim al-Hafl, in addition to individuals involved in “destructive activities.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the security campaign led to the arrest of 15 individuals in the town of al-Azbah in northern Deir Ezzor, alongside the arrest of 10 other people in the town of Abu Khashab in the western countryside of the governorate.

The SDF is conducting security campaigns in various areas under its control, during which it pursues members of Islamic State cells, as well as other groups that it claims are linked to the Syrian National Army (SNA) supported by Turkey, in addition to those they describe as “remnants of the regime” in eastern Deir Ezzor.

The Euphrates River has long been a front line between the ousted regime forces and the SDF in Deir Ezzor, and confrontations between the two sides have recurred on both banks of the river, where the SDF has repeatedly stated that the former Syrian regime supported military factions against it in the region.

Even after the fall of the regime, the area has witnessed attacks from groups of a tribal nature, which took control of some areas near the riverbank, but the SDF quickly regained control over them again.
