Reactions to Ahmed al-Sharaa’s appointment as president of Syria
Syrian institutions and bodies commented on the decisions that emerged from the “Victory Conference,” which resulted in the appointment of Ahmed al-Sharaa as president of Syria in the transitional phase, the dissolution of military factions, the Baath party, the People’s Assembly, security agencies, and the suspension of the 2012 Constitution.
The Secretary-General of the Syrian National Coalition, Haitham Rahma, congratulated on Thursday, January 30, for the “victory of the Syrian revolution” against the Assad regime and praised the appointment of al-Sharaa as president of Syria in the transitional phase.
Rahma called on Syrians to “work together” to uplift and build the Syrian state “in a manner befitting the sacrifices and aspirations of the Syrian people,” as he expressed.
He emphasized that the previous regime left the country in a “miserable” state in all aspects, calling for efforts to close gaps and achieve accomplishments.
For its part, the Syrian Islamic Council congratulated Ahmed al-Sharaa’s appointment as president of Syria and the victory of the revolution.
The Syrian Islamic Council is a moderate reference body in Syria that seeks to unify the voices of scholars and religious associations, find religious solutions to the problems and issues facing Syrians, and held its founding meeting in Istanbul in April 2014, attended by a number of Syrian scholars and preachers, according to its self-definition on its website.
The Muslim Brotherhood in Syria expressed its support for the General Command’s announcement to cancel the 2012 Constitution, dissolve the Baath party and the parties of the National Progressive Front, the People’s Assembly, and the military and security forces.
They also extended their congratulations to al-Sharaa on his appointment as president of Syria in the transitional phase.
“Victory Conference”
On Wednesday, January 29, the spokesperson for the Military Operations Administration, Hassan Abdul Ghani, announced several decisions during the “Victory Conference” held in Damascus, the most significant of which are:
- The transfer of al-Sharaa to the presidency of Syria in the transitional phase, carrying out the duties of the president of the Syrian Arab Republic, representing it in international forums, and authorizing him to form a temporary legislative council.
- Dissolution of the ruling Baath party in Syria during the previous regime, and the parties of the National Progressive Front, and banning their reformation.
- Dissolution of the security agencies and army affiliated with the previous regime, and the establishment of a new security institution, as well as the creation of a new army “on national foundations.”
- Dissolution of the People’s Assembly and cancellation of the 2012 Constitution.
- Dissolution of all military factions, revolutionary bodies, and political and civil organizations, and merging them into state institutions.
The activities of the “Victory Conference” commenced in the presence of al-Sharaa and leaders of Syrian factions that participated in military operations against the previous regime, announcing the victory of the Syrian revolution against the deposed Assad regime.
Al-Sharaa delivered a speech stating that “what Syria needs today more than ever, just as we committed ourselves in the past to liberate it, we now have the duty to commit ourselves to build and develop it.”
Al-Sharaa outlined Syria’s priorities, which included filling the power vacuum, preserving civil peace, building state institutions, establishing a developmental economic framework, and restoring the country’s international and regional status.
Additionally, the Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shibani, gave a speech, along with many military faction leaders.
