Ukraine provides 500 tons of flour to Syria
Ukraine announced the provision of wheat flour assistance to Syria in cooperation with the World Food Programme.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Friday, December 27, via the “X” platform, that a convoy carrying 500 tons of wheat flour is on its way to Syria.
This assistance is part of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative, and it is planned to distribute it to approximately 33,000 families, or about 167,000 people, in the coming weeks, according to Zelensky.
This comes after Russia suspended wheat exports to Syria on December 13 until further notice, citing “uncertainty regarding the new authority” and delays in settling previous financial dues.
The day after, Ukraine, a global producer and exporter of grains and oilseeds, announced its willingness to supply food to Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
Regarding the arrival of aid to Syria, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced on Thursday, December 26, the continuation of humanitarian assistance throughout Syria, noting that the delivery of aid across the Turkish border is proceeding without any obstacles.
The office mentioned that more than 20 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid crossed from the Bab al-Hawa border crossing into Idlib.
This aid included food and health supplies provided by three United Nations agencies.
The office warned of the deteriorating conditions of displaced people in the camps of Idlib and northern Aleppo, where about 730,000 people suffer from harsh living conditions as winter arrives.
The UN report confirmed that most displaced individuals expressed a desire to return to their original towns, but they face significant obstacles, the most notable being a lack of basic services, damaged infrastructure, and the presence of explosive remnants that threaten their lives.
The report indicated that 777 UN aid trucks crossed into northwestern Syria from Turkey since the beginning of the year, carrying essential food, health, and humanitarian supplies.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported today, Friday, December 27, that a total of 58,350 Syrians have returned, 26% of whom are men, 28% are women, and 46% are children, most of whom returned from Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey.
The commission stated that the number of Syrians expected to return in the next six months of 2025 is around one million.
It was previously mentioned that a team from the commission visited Idlib after the regime’s downfall and found that returning refugees are living in difficult conditions due to residing in tents, high rents, or because their homes are destroyed and uninhabitable.
