The chargé d’affaires of the Qatari embassy in Damascus raised his country’s flag at the Qatari embassy without officially opening it.

An Enab Baladi correspondent in Damascus reported that a Qatari diplomatic delegation raised their flag today, Saturday, December 21, at the Doha embassy in Damascus.

The Qatari delegation consisted of three individuals, accompanied by security personnel, according to what the correspondent observed in the Abu Rummaneh area of Damascus.

Members of the delegation refused to make any statements to the press.

Qatar has not officially announced any changes regarding its diplomatic representation in Syria up to the moment this news was published.

On December 11, the advisor to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majid bin Mohammed al-Ansari, announced the imminent reopening of the Qatari embassy in Syria.

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs published via its official account on “X” that Doha will soon reopen its embassy in Syria after completing the necessary arrangements.

Al-Ansari confirmed in a statement to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) that this step comes as a reinforcement of the deep historical brotherly relations between the two countries and their brotherly peoples.

This move reflects Qatar’s steadfast support for the Syrian people, who aspire to build their state on the foundations of justice, peace, stability, and prosperity, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Al-Ansari also stated that reopening the embassy will enhance coordination with relevant parties to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid that Qatar is currently providing to the Syrian people via the air bridge.

Qatar has been among the countries that supported Syrian opposition factions and institutions since their inception in 2012, while maintaining its stance against normalization with the Syrian regime over the past years.

Despite the Arab consensus on normalizing relations with the Syrian regime in the middle of the previous year, Qatar has remained opposed to this step.

On December 12, the Political Affairs Administration affiliated with the General Command in Syria announced that eight countries have resumed their diplomatic missions, while receiving promises from other countries intending to reopen their embassies in the country.

The Political Affairs Administration expressed gratitude via its official channels to Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, and Italy for resuming their diplomatic missions in Damascus.

It stated that it received direct promises from Qatar and Turkey to reopen their embassies in Syria.
