Mohammed al-Bashir to head Syria’s transitional government
The General Command in Syria has appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as the head of the transitional government until March 1, 2025.
Al-Bashir (41 years old) stated that the ministers of the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG), which was operating in Idlib, will take over the ministries in the new Syrian government, according to a television statement made today, Tuesday, December 10.
Today, a session was held between the team of the Salvation Government operating in Idlib and the ousted regime’s government to transfer institutions and hand over files from the latter to the new Syrian government.
The assignment of al-Bashir comes after the escape of the regime head Bashar al-Assad to Moscow, following the “Deterrence of Aggression” operation led by opposition factions on November 27, which reached Damascus on December 8.
On December 9, the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin made the decision to grant asylum to Bashar al-Assad and his family, stating that Putin’s schedule does not include any meetings with al-Assad at this time.
Al-Bashir has been the head of the Salvation Government operating in Idlib since January of this year.
Before assuming the presidency of the Salvation Government, he served as Minister of Development and Humanitarian Affairs during 2022 and 2023. He was born in 1983 in Jabal al-Zawiya in the southern Idlib governorate.
Al-Bashir holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specializing in Communications from Aleppo University in 2007, and worked as the head of the Precision Instruments Department at the Gas Plant of the Syrian Gas Company in 2011.
He was also the director of religious education at the Ministry of Endowments, Call, and Guidance for two and a half years.
According to his profile in the Salvation Government, he obtained a degree in Sharia and Law with honors from Idlib University in 2021 and a certificate in the principles of planning and administrative organization.
On November 27, the factions launched a military operation called “Deterrence of Aggression” in response to the repeated shelling of regime forces on northwestern Syria, and stated that its goal is to expand the “safe areas” in preparation for the return of the displaced and refugees.
The “Deterrence of Aggression” operation shifted from a battle to regain some areas, as many Syrians believed, to a battle whose repercussions reached Bashar al-Assad’s residence, where he fled before the popular and military opposition tide, culminating in the announcement of the regime’s downfall on the dawn of December 8.
