US targets Iranian-backed groups in Syria
US warplanes have struck sites belonging to Iranian-backed groups in Deir Ezzor province, eastern Syria, in response to attacks on US positions in the same region.
On November 11, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it struck Iranian group targets in Syria in response to attacks on US personnel.
In a statement via its official Arabic account on “X,” it noted that its aircraft targeted nine sites at two locations associated with Iranian groups in Syria following several assaults on US personnel within the past 24 hours.
According to CENTCOM, these strikes will weaken the ability of Iranian-backed groups to plan and conduct future attacks on the United States and Coalition Forces deployed in the region.
“The message is clear,” stated CENTCOM Commander General Michael Kurilla. “Attacks against the United States and Coalition partners in the region will not be tolerated. We will continue to take every necessary step to protect our personnel and our partners, and to respond to reckless attacks.”
A reporter from Enab Baladi in Deir Ezzor reported that airstrikes targeted the city of al-Mayadeen and the Ain Ali base in the desert area of al-Qouriya, eastern Deir Ezzor, with casualties resulting from the strikes.
Two airstrikes targeted the al-Shibli area in the city of al-Mayadeen, along with a monitoring and communications point in the same area, and the Ain Ali base in al-Qouriya desert was subjected to several strikes.
The US strikes in eastern Deir Ezzor were preceded by drone and rocket attacks on the al-Omar oil field base, where Coalition Forces led by the US are stationed, according to Enab Baladi’s reporter in the region.
The Russian news agency Sputnik reported that three rockets targeted the American base, one of which fell near the command center in the Green Village inside the base, while the other two landed in its vicinity.
This area is considered one of the most infested Syrian provinces with Iranian militia presence and serves as a main corridor for militias coming from Iran and Iraq into Syria and from there to Lebanon, and vice versa.
Similar attacks have frequently occurred in eastern Deir Ezzor province near the Syrian-Iraqi border, with the area regarded as an Iranian transit route occasionally witnessing a surge in arms smuggling and transportation operations, tapering off at other times.
US bases in the same region have previously faced repeated attacks, with the US responding with strikes on Iranian-backed militia sites, extending to targets inside Iraq hit by US airstrikes at the beginning of this year.
