The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Syrian regime’s government issued a statement condemning the Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and offering condolences on the killing of the Lebanese Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

The statement, which was reported by the official Syrian news agency (SANA) on Saturday, September 28, said, “With the martyrdom of the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, all fighters for the liberation of the land, and the protection and independence of sovereignty have lost.”

The ministry said that Syria condemns “the criminal Israeli act” and expresses its condolences to Lebanon.

It added that Nasrallah’s “supportive positions for the Syrian people” will continue to ensure the accountability of Israel.

The regime’s comment came about ten days after the start of the Israeli escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon, while the regime did not mention its Lebanese ally loyal to Iran, even in Bashar al-Assad’s latest appearance.

From the first moment of the escalation, the regime dealt with events in Lebanon, as it does in Gaza, by expressing solidarity with the neighboring country as a whole, but it ignored mentioning the military factions opposing Israel.

On Saturday morning, the Israeli army announced the killing of the Secretary-General of Lebanese Hezbollah, and Iran’s biggest ally in the region, Hassan Nasrallah.

Through its official account on “X” on Saturday, September 28, it said that it killed Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, yesterday, along with the party’s southern front commander Ali Karaki and other leaders.

Hezbollah confirmed the Israeli announcement and declared the death of its leader after hours of secrecy about his fate following a wide-scale Israeli airstrike that struck the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

In a statement carried by its affiliate Al-Manar channel, Hezbollah said that its leader joined the “caravan of the eternal, luminous Karbala martyrs in the divine faith journey, following the footsteps of prophets and martyred imams.”

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is considered one of the most prominent leaders of military groups in the Middle East and one of the most influential in the region, having a close relationship with Iran and the Syrian regime.

Under Nasrallah’s leadership, Hezbollah played significant roles in recent years in Syria, providing military support to the regime against the peaceful revolution that turned into armed conflict and called for its overthrow since 2011.
