The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) lifted the curfew imposed on areas under its control in eastern Deir Ezzor following a series of attacks on the region by tribal factions accused of being affiliated with the Syrian regime and Iran.

Local news accounts circulated a general notice issued by the Interior Authority affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in Deir Ezzor, today, Thursday, August 22, lifting the total curfew and converting it to a partial curfew during night hours.

According to Notice No. 5, which was verified by Enab Baladi through two sources in the Autonomous Administration, the implementation of Notice No. 3, which imposed a full curfew in the central and eastern regions, was canceled and replaced with a partial curfew in the same areas.

According to the notice, the curfew is effective from 6 PM to 6 AM.

It also indicated that violators would be subject to “deterrent judicial measures.”

The notice canceled the decision to close civilian and commercial crossings in Deir Ezzor, mentioning that the crossings would return to normal operations starting from the date of issuance.

Since August 7, clashes broke out between the SDF and tribal groups led by Ibrahim al-Hafl, a tribal figure accused of affiliation with the regime and Iran, supported by forces from the National Defense and the Iran-backed Baqir Brigade in eastern Deir Ezzor, with artillery cover from the Syrian regime forces stationed on the western bank of the Euphrates River.

In the wake of these events, the SDF imposed a curfew that affected the living conditions of the region’s residents who had not been displaced until today.

The SDF closed the water crossings connecting its controlled areas with areas controlled by the Syrian regime on the opposite bank of the river.

On August 15, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) commented on the clashes in Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, which affected the delivery of basic assistance and services to civilians in the Deir Ezzor and al-Hasakah provinces.

OCHA mentioned that Deir Ezzor witnessed violent clashes and sniper operations, resulting in at least 25 civilian deaths, injuries to others, and large-scale displacement.

The closure of the Euphrates River crossings and the clashes “severely” impeded civilians’ access to essential services and humanitarian aid, further restricting access to healthcare, water, and food, leading to a rise in prices and exacerbating harsh living conditions, according to OCHA.

The markets in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor under SDF control witnessed a rise in prices and the absence of some vegetables and fruits because the SDF checkpoints prevented cars’ entry under the guise of the imposed curfew due to the prevailing security tension in the area.

Residents in areas under SDF control struggled to secure their necessities due to the curfew and the ban on motorcycles on its streets as per the same curfew.

On August 13, the regime forces and SDF reached an agreement under Russian auspices that included lifting the siege on security quarters in the cities of al-Hasakah and Qamishli, provided that attacks in Deir Ezzor cease.
