Lebanon: 29 Syrians killed by Israeli bombing since beginning of Gaza war
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Lebanon (OCHA) has counted the number of Syrians killed in Lebanon as a result of Israeli bombing of various locations across the country since the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza.
In a special interview with UN News, Humanitarian Affairs Officer at OCHA, Fadl Saleh, explained on Friday, August 23, that the conflict in Lebanon has resulted in a large number of casualties and widespread displacement since October 8, 2023.
A total of 133 civilians have been documented as killed, including 33 women, 22 children, 21 paramedics, 3 journalists, and 29 Syrian nationals, many of whom were refugees.
Additionally, the Israeli bombing has caused the displacement of 110,000 people, who have moved to what they consider safer areas within Lebanon or have sought refuge in neighboring villages.
The UN updates these numbers weekly via OCHA, the United Nations Human Rights Office, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and other partners.
On August 17, the death toll from an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon reached ten Syrians.
At that time, the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli warplanes destroyed a concrete factory in the industrial zone in the Toll-Kafour area in Nabatiyah, southern Lebanon.
The strike resulted in the death of the factory guard, his wife, and their children, and injuring several others, including workers. Civil defense and rescue teams arrived at the scene and transported the bodies and injured to Sheikh Ragheb Harb Hospital near the site of the bombing, according to the agency.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army stated that its aircraft bombed Hezbollah military buildings in the areas of Hanin and Maroun al-Ras in southern Lebanon, and during the night, attacked a weapons depot belonging to them in the Nabatiyah area.
On the 1st of August, Syrians were killed and injured by an Israeli airstrike that targeted the area between the towns of Shaamaa and Teir Harfa, in addition to Lebanese casualties.
In mid-July, five Syrians, including three children, were killed by an Israeli strike that targeted two sites in southern Lebanon.
At that time, the bombing targeted a site in the town of Umm al-Tout in southern Lebanon, resulting in the death of three Syrian children, according to the Lebanese National News Agency.
The number of Syrian refugees registered with the UNHCR reaches 779,000, while Lebanese officials officially speak of more than 1.5 to 2 million Syrian refugees.
