European and UN officials organized a meeting on Syria in Romania to discuss the latest developments in the Syrian file, with the meeting scheduled to continue until Saturday, May 25.

The meeting, which was held on Thursday, May 23, in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, was attended by the European Union delegation to Syria, the European External Action Service (EEAS), envoys from several countries to Syria, and UN officials, according to the announcement by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its official website.

Romanian Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu affirmed during the meeting her country’s support for a political solution in Syria within the framework of Resolution 2254 and the “step-by-step” approach, adding, “It is important to coordinate with international partners to identify concrete ways to advance the political solution to the crisis in Syria.”

The Romanian Foreign Minister pointed out that her country has provided over 45 million euros in humanitarian aid to Syria over the past 10 years.

In the same context, the Head of the EU Delegation to Syria, Dan Stoenescu, emphasized the need for “dialogue and cooperation to keep the crisis in Syria in the international spotlight,” noting the attention the European Union and its member states give to the Syrian crisis.

For his part, Tarek Talhama, the Director of the UN Special Envoy’s Office to Syria, Geir Pedersen, in Damascus, warned that prolonging the crisis in Syria has a significant impact on the stability and security of the Middle East region, stressing the importance of coordinating and synchronizing international efforts to push forward the political process in Syria according to Resolution 2254.

This extraordinary meeting of international envoys in the Romanian capital comes three days before the ministerial meeting of the Brussels VIII Conference to support the future of Syria, which is scheduled to be held on May 27 at the EU Council headquarters.

The ministerial meeting in Brussels aims to mobilize vital financial support to meet the most urgent needs of Syrians and the local communities hosting them and to renew international community support for a political solution in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The Brussels VIII Conference was launched on April 30 as part of what is called the Dialogue Day, attended by Syrian civil society organizations, with about 800 people present, including European political figures, as well as representatives of UN partner organizations in Syria and countries hosting Syrian refugees.

The Dialogue Day agenda included discussing several topics, most notably the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, investing in the health workforce in Syria, the problems facing education, ways to enhance the sustainability of essential services and livelihood opportunities for refugees and host communities in Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon, supporting resilience and early recovery, and discussing the file of missing and detained persons in Syria.
