The chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, stated that the United States bears primary responsibility for the Israeli attack on a building near Tehran’s embassy in Damascus, while Washington continues to deny any prior knowledge of the attack.

According to what was reported by the Iranian Mehr News Agency on Saturday, April 6, Bagheri claimed that the US should be held accountable for the embassy attack, stating, “It must be held responsible for this act.”

He considered the attack to be a form of “suicide for Israel,” pointing out that the operation dubbed “Al-Aqsa Flood” has only revealed a small part of the “Resistance Front’s” capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that it is determined to punish Israel and its supporters in response to the attack that targeted their country’s embassy in Damascus.

In related news, the US network “CNN” reported on Friday that the United States is in a state of “high alert” and actively preparing for a potential “major” Iranian attack, which could occur as soon as the next week.

The anticipated attack might target Israeli or US assets in the region as a response to the Israeli strike in Damascus.

The network cited a “senior” US administration official, who stated that top US officials currently believe that a retaliatory attack by Iran is “inevitable,” a viewpoint that is shared by their Israeli counterparts.

Previously, the Axios website had reported, citing a spokesperson for the US National Security Council, that the United States played no role in the Israeli strike and added, quoting an unnamed senior US official, that Washington had communicated this to Tehran.

An unnamed “senior” Israeli official stated that the Israeli military is in a state of “high alert” in anticipation of retaliatory attacks from militias aligned with Iran in Syria.

The United States had previously warned Iran against responding to the attack on Tehran’s embassy in Syria by targeting US interests, according to what Reuters agency reported.

The alternate US representative for special political affairs at the United Nations, Robert Wood, said that his country had not received any prior warning regarding the attack, which Tehran blames on Washington.

On April 1, the Israeli Air Force bombed a site close to the Iranian embassy in the Mezzeh neighborhood of Damascus, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking officers of the Quds Force, which is part of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who was responsible for the Syria and Lebanon file.
