Jordan launches airstrikes inside Syria, downs drone
Warplanes, believed to be Jordanian, bombed scattered sites in the eastern countryside of Daraa governorate. Part of the bombardment occurred around the Nassib-Jaber border crossing that connects Syria with Jordan.
Correspondents from Enab Baladi in Daraa stated that warplanes launched strikes in the early hours of Monday, March 18, in the eastern countryside of the Daraa governorate, with no information on damages.
The sounds of the strikes resonated in the Shiah area, near the Nassib border crossing with Jordan, according to the correspondents.
The official spokesman for the Jordanian Armed Forces said that the sounds of aircraft over the northern regions of Jordan belonged to the Royal Jordanian Air Force jets, which had mobilized in response to a radar alert that detected unknown aerial movements, as reported by Jordan’s Al-Mamlaka channel.
The spokesman explained that the Jordanian Air Force jets confirmed the safety of Jordanian airspace and the absence of any threats before returning to their bases.
An informed military source in the Jordanian army told Enab Baladi that Jordan had detected two drones of unknown origin that were about to enter Jordanian territory, prompting the Air Force to move to shoot down the drones.
The source added that one of the drones fell ablaze inside Syrian territory near the Nassib crossing on the Amman-Damascus highway, without causing damage to the area where it fell.
The military source pointed out that the drones were not attempting to smuggle drugs but were offensive drones on a one-way course coming from Iraq.
The Daraa 24 website, specialized in covering news of the province, said that planes, presumed to be Jordanian, targeted the border area extending between the Shiah area and the town of Nassib on the Syria-Jordan border, with no information about damages.
Jordanian air raids on the villages in the southern countryside of As-Suwayda governorate targeting drug warehouses in the area have been repeated, and the raids have mostly resulted in civilian casualties, the latest of which occurred in the town of Arman east of the governorate, leaving nine dead.
From time to time, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a Shiite jihadist group supported by Iran, targets Israeli settlements with drones, since the latest attack launched by Israel on Gaza in October 2023.
Previously, drones launched by an Iraqi Shiite faction targeted an American military post inside Jordan known as “Tower 22,” resulting in the death of three American soldiers and injuries to more than 40 others.
The United States responded to the attack with a widespread bombing campaign that included 85 locations inside Iraq and Syria, belonging to Shiite militias supported by Iran.
