At least eight internally displaced persons (IDPs) were killed in al-Hol camp, northeast of al-Hasakah governorate, over June, France Press reported yesterday.

Cells affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) are suspected of carrying out these assassinations. All the victims were shut in the head.

France Press reported that among the casualties were a 16-year-old Iraqi boy, two Syrian sisters, one is 17-year-old, and a Russian woman.

Since early 2021, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) recorded over 47 assassinations at the camp, where women and children make 93 percent of the population.

The recent figures collected by the camp’s administration show that there are approximately 62,000 IDPs in the camp, among them are 22,000 Syrians, 30,000 Iraqis, and 8965 foreigners from over 40 countries.

Larger numbers of IDPs sought refuge at the camp following the offensive launched by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and U.S.-led collation in the IS’s last stronghold. The SDF controlled the area and declared the hardliner group’s end on 23 March 2019.

Backed by the SDF, the Asayish conducted a security drive in the camp last April. The Asayish arrested dozens of IS affiliates, including commanders, from the camp.

The Asayish, back then, stated they have arrested 125 militants of IS sleeper cells, including 20 officers in charge of the cells and responsible for the assassinations in the camp.

The Asayish added that during the searches they also exposed military equipment and electric circuits used for making improvised explosive devices.

Commenting on former such deaths in the camp, United Nations’ officials made a statement expressing their rising concern over what they described as “an increasingly untenable security environment at al-Hol.”
