A Vigil in al-Rukban Camp Demands Breaking the Siege
The refugees at the al-Rukban Camp, Syrian-Jordanian borders, have organized a vigil, condemning the siege imposed on them by the Assad’s forces.
The demonstrators, according to videos delivered to Enab Baladi, today, Friday (October 12), called on the international organizations and the international community to break the siege over the camp and provide the refugees with aid and medicine.
The demonstrators, including children, carried signs demanding ending the siege; they additionally called on the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to interfere and save the camp.
Since June, the al-Rukban has been suffering a suffocating siege, after the closer of the port connecting it with Jordan under a Russian pressure and the blockage of the al- Dumayr road by Assad’s forces. The Camp’s dilemma was enhanced by “UNICEF” closing of the medical point a week ago, without declaring the reasons.
The al-Rukban Camp suffers the absence of major food and medical supplies, with the presence of cases that need surgeries, especially midwifery, in addition to medicines.
Last Tuesday, two children died due to the worsening healthcare situation and absence of needed medical supplies.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICIF) has appealed to all the actors in Syria to admit aid to the besieged refugees.
The organization, last Wednesday, has posted the following on its “Twitter” account: “[We appeal] to all parties to the conflict in Syria and those who have influence over them, to allow and facilitate access to basic services including health for children and families. This is the very minimum for human dignity.”
“The situation for the estimated 45,000 people- among them many children- will worsen further with the cold winter months fast approaching, especially when temperatures dip below freezing point in the harsh desert conditions,” UNICEF added.
For its part the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces has today called on the International community to take immediate action as to save the refugees and ensure them a complete and constant healthcare services, as well as imposing pressure on the Syrian regime to stop its siege and allow for the aid’s admission unconditionally.
