Idlib: Students Events Celebrates Former women Detainees
“I was arrested by the regime’s intelligence forces through an ambush they prepared for me in Mezzeh, against the background of my revolutionary activities, peaceful demonstrations and sit-ins. I was humiliated, and then sent to the al-Khatib Brach, where they placed me in an individual cell. After this, I was moved into the communal prison dormitory, where I saw young people tortured in different ways. I heard their voices as they suffered the torture.”
This is how the former prisoner, from the Darayya city, Ghada Abaar described her bitter experience in the Syrian regime’s prisons, in an interview during the award ceremony launched by the Women Affairs Committee of the Cultural Center in Idlib on Friday (September 7) in cooperation with the Student Office at the university.
Seven former women detainees were honored during the student office’ event, which included intervals of singing and a play, the heroines of which represented women detainees.
The event was attended by about 50 to 60 people, including men and women journalists.
The number of Syrian women detainees at the Syrian regime’s detention centers since 2011 is estimated with about eight thousand detainees, of whom 43 died due to torture according to a census issued by the “Syrian Network for Human Rights” in March 2018.
The Syrian Network reports that females, detained at the Syrian regime’s prisons, are exposed to different types of systematic humiliation, insults, pattering and horrific torture starting with the first moment of arrest until the detained women reaches the detention center.
The published figures state that Assad’s forces and loyalist militias have committed no less than 7699 incidents of sexual violence, out of which 864 cases took place at the detention centers, and no less than 432 cases of sexual violations against girls under the age of 18 since March 2011 to March 2018, according to a report issued by the “Syrian Network for Human Rights.”
