Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani has called for the lifting of economic sanctions against the Syrian people.

Al-Shibani stated, during a visit leading a high-level delegation to Doha, that Qatar has played a prominent role in supporting the Syrian people and will be a partner in the peace phase.

He mentioned today, Sunday, December 5, that all key and strategic issues were discussed with the Qatari side, and that the Syrian delegation conveyed Syria’s concerns, especially regarding economic sanctions.

Al-Shibani’s statements came after his meeting with his Qatari counterpart, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry, via “X”, reported that the Foreign Minister received a high-level Syrian delegation that included the Foreign Minister, Minister of Defense Murhaf Abu Qasra, and head of the intelligence service, Anas Khattab.

During the meeting, the cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to support and develop them were reviewed, as well as discussions on the latest developments in Syria, enhancing Qatari humanitarian aid to relieve the Syrian people, in addition to a number of topics of mutual interest.

The Qatari Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s support for Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and independence, and achieving the aspirations of its brotherly people for a dignified life and the establishment of a state of institutions and law.

Also participating in the meeting from the Qatari side was Qatari State Minister Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, who stated that steps contributing to building Syria of tomorrow were discussed with the Syrian delegation, reaffirming that Doha will spare no effort in supporting the Syrian people.

Before the Syrian delegation’s visit to Doha, al-Shibani received a phone call from the Qatari State Minister, who confirmed Qatar’s support for the new administration, increased cooperation between the two countries, and standing by the Syrian people on all fronts to rebuild Syria, while referring to ongoing efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, according to the Syrian Foreign Ministry.

This visit is the second for the Foreign Minister in the new Syrian administration following a previous visit to Saudi Arabia; it was preceded by a visit from the Qatari State Minister to Damascus earlier for the first time after the overthrow of the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime on December 8, 2024.

This current visit comes as part of al-Shibani’s first Arab diplomatic tour, which will also include the UAE and Jordan.
