The revenues of the Nassib crossing, which connects Syria to Jordan, have exceeded one trillion Syrian pounds, equivalent to about one million dollars at the rate of the Syrian Central Bank, since the beginning of the current year.
The local Al-Watan newspaper reported, citing an unnamed source at the crossing, that revenues for 2024 have increased compared to the previous year, which were 620 billion pounds.
Al-Watan explained that the average daily shipping movement with Jordan ranges between 150 to 200 trucks (entering and exiting).
The exports leaving the crossing include citrus fruits, vegetables, and some manufactured food products.
Olive oil tops the list of exports from Syria to Jordan, packaged in small containers, according to Al-Watan.
The Union of Transport Companies and two other sources stated that there is a problem with the movement of trucks in Jordanian territory due to the replacement of Syrian trucks with Jordanian ones.
The Union of Transport Companies added that Syrian trucks and refrigerated trucks are not allowed to complete the journey toward Gulf countries, according to the regulations issued in several Gulf countries, such as Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia did not grant visas for Syrian refrigerated trucks in 2023, preventing them from crossing into the country.
Saudi requirements focus on the technical specifications of refrigerated trucks, especially the year of manufacture, which does not apply to a large number of Syrian trucks.
This issue is not new, as hundreds of Syrian trucks line up at the Nassib crossing waiting to enter the Jordanian side, most of which carry vegetables and fruits. The delay and the replacement of trucks and refrigerated trucks in Jordan affect the quality of goods and impose additional costs on traders to operate continuous refrigeration.
Last month, both the Syrian and Jordanian sides announced plans to expand and rehabilitate the existing facilities at the Nassib-Jaber crossing between the two countries and resolve the issues related to the capacity of the site at Nassib, in relation to the number of trucks loaded with goods.
The newspaper reported that the implementation of renovation and maintenance works at the crossing has approached 60% of the total planned works.
